28: S.M.A.R.T. status indicative of nothing

Sometimes it boggles my mind that anyone takes S.M.A.R.T. seriously.

I pulled the drive -- for which a smartmon report is shown below -- from a family member's aging Mac. This is after the place they took it for "diagnostic" claimed it needed a new battery, new RAM, and a new drive.

Aside from the drive I could locate absolutely no other faults.

Obviously this drive is long-past end-of-life. How it worked even this long is more than I can fathom.

I don't imagine it ever will, after 65K+ read errors. (It's probably lost more sectors that it reports at this point, and they're likely being chewed through even as I try to rescue it.)

Thankfully, this family member is amazing at keeping backups, so my assistance was barely needed this time. I installed a spare 1TB drive I had previously used in this machine and set the backup restore in motion, then let them take over.

The machine is from 2011 and was my daily driver for years. It has outlived four spindle drives now, and seems like it could possibly make it through one more.

I wish Apple understood that their hardware design choices are costing them sales. I switched away from their offerings due to the TouchBar fiasco, only to hear about the abysmal keyboard mechanism later on. This particular family member is feeling more interested in jumping ship as well, once this machine has given up its magic smoke. They are simply not cost-effective any longer: regardless of how long the older machines can be milked along, the new ones are not nearly repairable enough.

In fact, this kind of time-deferred maintenance is not even possible with most of their machines from the past decade. Glue is not a user-friendly fastening medium, Apple.
