I saw this linked by @email@example.com, and it resonated with me in a way I have not until now been able to articulate.
Proprietary software, though not inherently unethical, creates undesirable incentives and conditions ripe for exploitation.
Despite my continual distaste for and avoidance of proprietary software and formats, this is exactly the sort of thing I am perpetually warning my friends and family about getting too complacent about allowing in their own lives.
Data-lock-in is unpleasant, and a tough quagmire from which to extricate oneself once having sunk precious time into such a system.
